We see in the supermarket bags of potato chips, pepperoni, beef jerky, etc., almost all use flexible packaging.
Make a good flexible packaging bag is not easy, different contents require packaging with different “special” features:
As oxygen can cause oxidative deterioration of fats and proteins, to have an excellent barrier to oxygen;
Because of the water vapor into or volatilization can cause changes in the taste of food, to have excellent water vapor barrier capacity;
In order to prevent the entry of odor or volatilization of flavor, to ensure that the original flavor of food, to have excellent ability to block the aroma;
In order to meet the needs of sealing and preservation, it should have good heat sealing performance;
To meet the requirements of sterilization and avoid the presence of microorganisms to destroy food, the bags should have a certain degree of heat resistance;
In order to decorate beautiful and commodity necessary information needs, to have good printability;
In order to protect the food, to meet the needs of handling and transportation, need to have strong mechanical properties;
Other optical properties of some of the requirements.

Traditional multi-layer material composite bags have good high barrier properties, but can not be recycled. Single material (PP/PET/PE) structure is a fully recyclable solution, but one of the biggest technical difficulties is heat resistance and barrier properties.

Currently the industry is through the improvement of raw material resin properties, processing technology, to solve the problem of heat resistance of single material packaging bags.

As for the single material flexible bags barrier problem, there have been a number of innovative solutions emerge.

All-PE and all-PP structures for multiple product types
Jointhope has introduced products based on PE and PP single material substrates, thus replacing the traditional multiple structures and providing excellent barrier and sealing performance for packaging.
Targeting multiple fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) categories, including snacks, confectionery, coffee and tea, fresh and processed foods, as well as home and personal care, the new laminated pouches are designed to improve recyclability and food preservation performance.
In addition, the plastic flexible packaging range will be available in transparent and printed films, with different glossy and matte finishes available for gravure and flexo printing.

High barrier properties turn out to play such an important role
Now a single environmentally friendly structure in the PVA coated barrier film and EVOH barrier layer is more widely used, for some dry food, daily chemical products, water, oxygen barrier is basically comparable to the traditional multi-material packaging, but the shelf life of the food will be shorter than the conventional composite packaging, and the cost of the ordinary packaging than the high 20% to 30% above.
As for oil-blocking, light-blocking, chemical resistance and other issues, a single structure of flexible bags barrier effect is still limited, so it is difficult to be widely used in all food packaging. Nevertheless, food and beverage brands, packaging companies are very enthusiastic about the development of a single material, and continue to break through the technological bottlenecks of a single material, I believe that in the “dual-carbon” goals and sustainable development, a single material packaging will be widely used in the future.
